The Seldom Scene was established in 1971 in a basement in Bethesda, Maryland. The original line-up was John Starling on guitar, Mike Auldridge on Dobro, Ben Eldridge on banjo, Tom Gray on double bass, and John Duffey on mandolin. Charlie Waller, a member of the Country Gentlemen, can be credited for the band’s name . . . expressing his doubt that this new band could succeed, Waller reportedly asked Duffey, “What are you going to call yourselves, the seldom seen?” The band performed weekly at the Red Fox Inn before getting a residency at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Virginia. The rest is history.
The progressive bluegrass style played by the Seldom Scene became increasingly popular during the 1970s. Their shows included bluegrass versions of country music, rock, and pop. The band’s popularity soon forced them to play more than once a week —but they continued to maintain their image as being seldom seen, and on several early album covers they were photographed with the stage lights on only their feet, or with their backs to the camera. Though the Scene remained a non-touring band, they were prolific recorders, producing seven albums in their first five years, including one of the first live bluegrass albums.
Darin and Brooke Aldridge, on April 19th, released their tenth recorded project, Talk of the Town on Billy Blue Records, and they continue to ascend to new heights in the bluegrass music industry while maintaining their easy-going, down-to-earth connection with audiences. Brooke is a four-time winner of the Female Vocalist of the Year award for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), and they were nominated for the IBMA Vocal Group of the Year award in 2021. They’ve had multiple nominations from IBMA, the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America (SPBGMA), and the Inspirational Country Music Association. In April 2023, they were named “Bluegrass Artists of the Year” at the Absolutely Gospel Music Awards.
Darin & Brooke have enjoyed top spots on the Billboard, SiriusXM, Bluegrass Today, Bluegrass Unlimited, Americana/Roots, and Gospel charts. Their music videos have been featured on CMT, CMT Edge, Great American Country, Bluegrass Ridge TV, and Bluegrass Situation. Their television appearances include PBS’ Mountain Stage, Songs of the Mountain and Music City Roots; RFD-TV’s Larry’s Country Diner, and Country’s Family Reunion. They have graced the Opry stage more than 55 times.
Kristy Cox, a billboard-topping recording artist, has received radio success and accolades for her talent. She has been awarded 6 ‘Bluegrass Recording of the Year’ awards in the Australia’s CMA Awards (Golden Guitar Awards), her latest in 2023 for her track ‘Good Morning Moon.’ Praised for her performance and songwriting capabilities, Kristy has been shortlisted in the International Bluegrass Music Awards the past five years for Emerging Artist of the Year and Female Vocalist of the Year and was a finalist in the 2019 IBMA Momentum Awards for Vocalist of the Year. Kristy was a 2024 SPBGMA Female Vocalist of the Year finalist.
From a young age, Kristy has captured attention with her distinct singing and positive outlook, opening shows for major acts and appearing on television and at festivals across Australia, Europe and the USA.
